"Just as the LORD of hosts determined"

Text: Zechariah 1:6

THE QUESTION THAT WAS RAISED

The LORD raised a question to the remnant returnees. They reflected and came up with the correct answer.

“So they returned and said:
‘Just as the LORD of hosts determined to do to us,
According to our ways and according to our deeds,
So He has dealt with us.'”
Zechariah 1:6d

1. “So they returned and said”

a) The question God raised was not a rhetorical one.
b) God wanted the remnant returnees to return to Him with an answer.

2. “Just as the LORD of hosts determined to do to us”

a) The LORD’S determination:
i) This was a reference to the judgment of God.
This was determined by the Lord.
ii) His judgment was made known to Israel and Judah by the prophets.
b) This was a conclusion:
i) That was obvious. History confirmed the veracity and power of God’s word.
ii) The lessons must be well-learned.

3. “According to our ways and according to our deeds, so He has dealt with us.”

a) This was humble admission.
b) God was not at fault even though the judgment saw Israel losing their homeland.
c) “According to our deeds”
i) Idolatry
ii) Many wicked deeds
d) God dealt with Israel and Judah correctly. He could not be faulted in any way!
