"Your fathers, where are they?"

Text: Zechariah 1:5

THE LEADERS OF THE NATION

Leaders are given by the LORD. They were raised up to lead the nation to walk in the ways of God. But leaders can sometimes go terribly wrong.

“Your fathers, where are they?
And the prophets, do they live forever?”
Zechariah 1:5

1. God’s provision of leaders

a) Kings
b) Elders of the nations who were supposed to lead by their wisdom.
c) Priests who were supposed to know the laws of God.

2. “Your fathers, where are they?”

a) The term “father” was one of great respect.
b) The people had great respect for their leaders.
c) They followed them blindly, even if they were to lead the nation astray, into idolatry.
d) Where were these honoured “fathers”?
i) They were either killed.
ii) Or, they were in captivity.

3. “And the prophets, do they live forever?”

a) The true prophets were raised by God to help the leaders and the people to repent and to return to their original faith.
b) But the false prophets managed to gain the upper hand.
i) They flattered the rulers.
ii) They deceived them.
iii) They only had their own ideas to offer to the nation.
c) The true prophets sought to offer resistance.

But many were killed! But what about the “successful prophets”? Where were they?
