"The LORD has been very angry with your fathers"

Text: Zechariah 1:2

THE ANGER OF THE LORD

The prophet Zechariah was privileged to have had a father who was a historian and a respected seer. It would not be difficult to understand his knowledge of the history of Israel.

“The LORD has been very angry with your fathers.”
Zechariah 1:2

1. “The LORD”

a) This was the simple title that Zechariah chose to describe God.
b) This title is of great historical significance.
c) It was used historically by God Himself (Exodus 6:2-4).
d) The following things may be noted with reference to this word:
i) It was a new title with which God would relate to Israel.
ii) To the patriarchs of old, He was “God Almighty”.
iii) The title LORD would be associated with the Covenant He would establish with Israel.
iv) This would be the Covenant Name of God.

2. “Has been very angry with your fathers”

a) God’s anger was not directed at the patriarchs.
b) But He had been very angry with their fathers.

3. Some reasons for God’s great anger:

a) The idolatrous ways of the people.
b) Their forsaking of God.
c) Their evil ways.
d) Their arrogant impudence.
e) Their rebellious spirit.
f) Their stubbornness.
