"The Angel of the LORD"

Text: Zechariah 1:11

COMMUNICATION AMONG THE ANGELIC HORSEMEN

The horsemen represented the angels of the LORD who patrol the earth. They made a report to the Angel of the LORD.

“So they answered the Angel of the LORD,
who stood among the myrtle trees, and said,
‘We have walked to and fro throughout the earth,
and behold, all the earth is resting quietly.'”
Zechariah 1:11

1. The identification of the Angel of the LORD

a) This was done slowly but surely.
b) He was first introduced as “a man riding on a red horse” (Zechariah 1:8a).
c) He was clearly the leader for the other horsemen formed up behind him (Zechariah 1:8c).
d) It was “the man who stood among the myrtle trees” who spoke (Zechariah 1:10).
e) The angels who patrolled the earth reported to “The Angel of the LORD”, who stood among the myrtle trees (Zechariah 1:11).

2. The report of the patrolling angels

a) “So they answered the Angel of the LORD, who stood among the myrtle trees”
i) This was clearly making a report to a Superior.
ii) The angels gave their report to their “Commanding Officer”.
b) “We have walked to and fro throughout the earth, and behold, all the earth is resting quietly.”
i) They had surveyed and carefully observed the earth, having “walked to and fro”.
ii) The earth was indeed resting quietly.

3. Historically

a) The Empire of the Medo-Persians was established after they had conquered the Babylonians. The Medo-Persians preferred to establish peace.
b) In a magnanimous gesture, King Cyrus allowed the Jews to return to their homeland to rebuild their nation.

The Angel of the LORD was mentioned in the Book of Genesis (Genesis 16:7-13).
