"A man riding on a red horse"

Text: Zechariah 1:8

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE VISION OF THE HORSES

A closer look at the vision of the horses would be necessary for better understanding.

“I saw by night, and behold, a man riding on a red horse,
and it stood among the myrtle trees in the hollow;
and behind him were horses: red, sorrel, and white.”
Zechariah 1:8

1. The scene portrayed

a) Horses
i) The “horses” mentioned would have to include horsemen (synecdoche).
ii) These horsemen were grouped together.
iii) The herd of horses had the usual mix of colours.
iv) The colour “sorrel” is light brown (common colour among horses).
b) An organised group of horsemen
i) There was a clear leader who was described as sitting on a red horse.
ii) There were horsemen behind him.
c) “Among the myrtle trees in the hollow”
i) The word “hollow” suggests a valley.
ii) Myrtle trees were “humbler” compared to the mighty cedars.
iii) The scene is peaceful.

2. “A man riding on a red horse, and it stood among the myrtle trees”

a) The scene described some movement, of a man riding on his red horse.
b) He came to a stop in a valley.
c) The horsemen stood in the hollow.
d) His group of horsemen stood with him in the hollow.
e) It was this scene that Zechariah saw.

The Lord was seeking to reveal important spiritual truths to Zechariah in this vision.
