"The grace of God..."

Text: Titus 2:11

THE SALVATION OF GOD

The admonition given to the bondservants seems to be a tall order. What was Paul’s advice based upon? The following text offers an important application of the doctrine of salvation.

“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared
to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts,
we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”
Titus 2:11-12

1. “For the grace of God that brings salvation…to all men”

a) Our salvation is truly out of the abundant grace of God.
b) The word “brings” may also be understood as “manifested” or “revealed”.
c) Through God’s grace we understand and appreciate the need of salvation.

2. Salvation is only the beginning

a) Our coming to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is only the beginning.
b) There is much more to salvation than just knowing that we believe in a wonderful Saviour.

3. “Teaching us”

a) Knowledge of God’s grace and salvation must be further pursued.
b) We need to be taught further.

4. The lifestyle that ensues from true salvation.

a) We must deny all forms of ungodliness.
b) We must reject all worldly lusts.
c) We must strive to live soberly.
d) A major feature of our life should be righteousness.
e) We must ever seek to live in a godly manner.

5. “The present age”

a) In Paul’s time
i) There was much worldliness.
ii) There was much wickedness.
iii) The danger of succumbing to the world was very real.
b) In our present days

We face the same kind of problems. The challenge is to ensure that we live as godly children of God.
