"The sufferings of this present time..."

Text: Romans 8:18

SUFFERING WITH CHRIST

Paul had already written much about what the Lord has promised and provided for us when He gave to us our salvation in Christ! It is only right that this text also be written.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time
are not worthy to be compared with the glory which
shall be revealed in us.”
Romans 8:18

1. Fear of suffering

It is vital that we factor in the concept of suffering as something that is part and parcel of believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.

a) Many fear suffering.
b) Many allow the fear of suffering to get the better of them.

In another epistle, the apostle Paul had these words to say about suffering and believing in Christ.

“For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ,
not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake.”
Philippians 1:29

2. Addressing the fear of suffering

How may we overcome our fear of suffering effectively? Let us consider the following suggestions:-

a) The sufferings of this present time
i) It is good to accept suffering as part and parcel of our faith in Christ.
ii) It is vital we remember that Christ Himself bore much suffering- for us!
b) The glory which shall be revealed in us
i) This life we have in the present is at best temporary and ephemeral.
ii) The suffering we may have to endure pales in comparison to the glory that will be revealed.

A PERSONAL TESTIMONY

Paul wrote in the first person (“I consider…”) to show that he himself had to undergo much suffering. His words bore powerful testimony of his vital faith in Christ.
