"But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit..."
Text: Romans 8:9
A WONDERFULLY ENLIGHTENING WORD
What a wonderful word of enlightenment we have in this text! And with it, we also have a glorious hope!
“But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit,
if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,
he is not His.”
Romans 8:9
1. Not in the flesh
a) How wonderful it is to know that we are not considered “in the flesh”
(even though technically we are flesh and blood).
b) How are we “not in the flesh”?
We are not in the flesh when we reject the carnal mindset!
2. In the Spirit
a) The Spirit of God is given to every believer at salvation
i) He is the Seal (Cf. Ephesians 1:13-14)
ii) He is the Guarantee (Cf. Ephesians 1:13-14)
b) He is given to indwell every genuine believer
i) So that he might be able to reject carnality.
ii) So that he might be able to become spiritually minded.
AN IMPORTANT REALITY CHECK
1. How do we know who the Holy Spirit is?
a) It will be obvious for He will be just like Christ in His Being.
b) Like Christ who came to give us life, so the Spirit of God comes to regenerate every believer.
2. If we do not have the Spirit of God in us
There is no mistaking the significance of this vital reality check. If we do not have the Spirit of God in us then we must also know that we do not belong to God.
