"The righteous requirement of the law..."

Text: Romans 8:4

DISTINGUISHING THE WORKS OF THE GODHEAD

On the one hand, Paul calls us to consider the ministry of the Holy Spirit. On the other hand, he also calls attention to the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. How do we distinguish their areas of ministry? Let us take time to ponder the following text.

“That the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us
who do not walk according to the flesh,
but according to the Spirit.”
Romans 8:4

1.The holy and righteous demands of God the Father

a) That His laws must be fulfilled.
b) That any transgression of His laws must be punished.

2. The vital work of the Lord Jesus Christ

a) He came to fulfill all righteous requirements of the law.
b) In fulfilling it, He met the holy demands of God and His laws.
c) His death was vicarious!
i) He died on behalf of all sinners.
ii) He took their punishment upon Himself.

3. The vital work of the Holy Spirit

a) He could not die on the cross for us, being Spirit.
b) What He did was to apply the effects of Christ’s death to all who believed in Him.
c) The evidence of the Spirit’s work in the life of a true believer includes the following:-
i) He regenerates the believer, creating new life in him.
ii) He enables the believer to have a new walk (new lifestyle).
iii) This walk (lifestyle) is not fashioned after the flesh.
iv) The Spirit of God teaches the believer how to walk according to His leading
