"The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free..."

Text: Romans 8:2

THE BACKDROP

Let us bear in mind the backdrop Paul had painted (Cf. Romans 6-7):-

1. The law of sin

2. The law of evil

Paul painted a bleak backdrop indeed! The believer, no matter how strong-willed he may be will never be able to defeat sin and evil on his own strength.

THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT

Paul introduced the doctrine of the Spirit of God wonderfully with these words.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those
who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according
to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free
from the law of sin and death.”
Romans 8:1-2

1. No condemnation

a) The Spirit of God will not condemn us even when we struggle weakly against sin.
b) His task and ministry is not condemnation!

2. He enables the believer

a) To walk according to His leading.
b) To walk contrary to the flesh.
c) He comes to give life to the believer:-
i) Eternal life
ii) A life of freedom and victory against sin

3. The law of the Spirit

a) The way the Spirit of God operates may indeed be called “a law”.
b) What He does is something that each and every believer may personally experience.

(Apostle or “ordinary believer”)
