"The law of the Spirit..."

Text: Romans 8:2

THE PROMISE OF GOD’S SPIRIT

The doctrine of the Holy Spirit in Romans 8 is best studied in the light of the following contexts:-

1. The promise of the Gift of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.

“I will pour My Spirit on your descendants.” Isaiah 44:3b

“I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh.” Joel 2:28

“I will pour out My Spirit in those days.” Joel 2:29

2. The promise of the Gift of the Holy Spirit by the Lord Jesus Christ

a) Prayer for the Gift of the Spirit to be given to all believers

“I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.” John 14:16

b) Description of the Spirit of God and His ministry
i) The Spirit of truth (Cf. John 14:17; 15:26)
ii) He will indwell all believers (Cf. John 14:19)
iii) He will be our Teacher (Cf. John 14:26)
iv) He will bear witness concerning Jesus (Cf. John 15:26)
v) He will convict people of sin (Cf. John 16:8)
vi) He will glorify Jesus (Cf. John 16:14)
vii) He will reveal glorious truth (Cf. John 16:14-15)

3. The Advent of the Spirit of God (as recorded in the Book of Acts)

a) The Book of Acts makes vital observations about His role.
b) He fulfilled the prophecies written of His ministry.
c) He fulfilled what Jesus spoke about Him.
