"Sin that dwells in me"

Text: Romans 7:20

WHERE WAS PAUL GOING WITH ALL HIS CANDIDNESS ABOUT SIN?

This is an important question that must be raised! Let us now ponder the following text that he wrote- just as candidly.

“Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it,
but sin that dwells in me.”
Romans 7:20

1. A clear admission

a) There is a struggle between Paul and the sin-principle.
b) There is an admission that sometimes the sin-principle has the upper hand.

2. The presence of sin

a) This must be distinguished from the “sin-nature” of man.
b) This nature has already been put to death through Christ. (Cf. Romans 6:6)
c) Nevertheless sin can dwell in the redeemed.

3. Sin that dwells in me

a) Sin is the foe here.
i) It is left unidentified.
ii) Each man has his own particular sin problem.
b) Paul is not dealing with the sin-nature in this text.
i) He notes that whatever sin a person commits, that becomes a sin-problem.
ii) That sin-problem becomes a “resident sin-problem”.
iii) That particular sin will keep attacking the flesh.
c) The strength of this sin problem
i) This sin-problem must not be dismissed lightly.
ii) The sin-problem is not easily resolved because it dwells in the individual.
