"No longer be slaves of sin..."

Text: Romans 6:6

A SLAVE TO SIN

It was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself who warned of the danger of sin.

“Jesus answered them,
‘Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin
is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever,
but a son abides forever.
Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
John 8:34-36

But how does one break the yoke of slavery imposed by sin? The answer lay in the work that the Son of God must perform! Only in and through His death for us will it enable us to find the freedom much sought after.

A SLAVE TO SIN NO LONGER

The honour was given to the apostle Paul to write this thrilling word of hope!

“Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him,
that the body of sin might be done away with,
that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
For he who has died has been freed from sin.”
Romans 6:6-7

1. Sin has made our bodies slaves.

2. Sin’s power over us must be destroyed before we can be freed from its power.

3. Sin’s power is exerted:

a) Through the “old man”
b) On the body of sin.

4. But if the old man is crucified and died

a) Then sin cannot rule a dead “old man”
b) And the genuine believer can experience the freedom Jesus promised.
c) The close identification with Christ has brought about the much-desired freedom from sin’s clutches.

FREED FROM BEING ENSLAVED BY SIN

What a wonderful Gospel message we have! How wonderful it is to know that we can have power over sin. We are no longer slaves of sin.
