"And perseverance character, and character, hope."

Text: Romans 5:4

GOD’S PROVISION FOR A POWERFUL EARTHLY LIFE

God’s redemptive plan covers two vital aspects:-

1. With reference to eternity.

a) We stand justified in God’s sight.
b) Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us through faith.
c) We have access to the very presence of God.
d) One day we will live with God for all eternity.

2. With reference to life on earth

a) Faith produces a powerful sense of hope within us.
b) The tribulations of life cannot destroy genuine faith.
c) The trials and tribulations of life will produce a powerful spirit of perseverance.

“And perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
Romans 5:4

THE SPIRIT OF PERSEVERANCE

The word “perseverance” (“hupomone”) is another powerful word Paul employed time and again. It describes a person who is more than able to cope under the greatest pressure. This is what God has provided for every believer who has a genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

A SOLID CHARACTER

The word “character” (“dokimen”) is another exciting word. It describes a person who has been carefully examined. Precious stones and metals were often subjected under very stringent tests. Those which had passed all the rigorous tests are classified as “dokimen”. These have been proven to be of true character or worth!

TRUE HOPE

What is hope? It is more than just a sentiment! It incorporates the following features of faith, perseverance and character. The trials and tribulations of life cannot destroy the true faith of a believer. The severest trials of life will produce “faith-hope” of the finest quality! Yes, Paul was absolutely right to say that we may “boast” (“rejoice” and “glory”) in our faith and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ!
