"Justification of life..."

Text: Romans 5:18

THE SIN OF ADAM

What was Adam’s role that brought about the introduction of sin and consequently of judgment and condemnation? The operative word is “transgression”.

“Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses,
even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness
of the transgression of Adam…”

Romans 5:14

To “transgress” is to break the clear and specific commandment of God given! God had given clear instruction to Adam that he was not to transgress by eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Deliberately, Adam chose to disobey God and thus transgressed!

REVERSING THE JUDGMENT THAT CAME UPON SINFUL MANKIND

How would Jesus be able to reverse the effects of sin upon mankind? Paul offered this insight.

“Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came
to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through
one Man’s righteous act, the free gift came to all men,
resulting in justification of life.”

Romans 5:18

1. Adam’s offense

a) Judgment came about- affecting all men!
b) The end result- condemnation!

2. Jesus’ righteous act

a) This was not a single act
b) The “righteous act” of Jesus His entire life!
i) His whole life was devoted to obeying His Father
ii) He must not… and did not transgress any of God’s commandments
iii) He must be prepared to atone for man’s sins… with His own life
iv) God would have to examine and adjudge that Jesus “righteous act”
Was sufficient to pay for man’s transgressions
c) The result- Man’s justification- he is given the gift of righteousness and life!
