"Not written for his sake alone..."

Text: Romans 4:23

THE WONDERFUL STORY OF ABRAHAM

Everyone has a wonderful life story to tell. The life of Abraham is indeed a deeply moving story of how God blessed him! Paul, however, was quick to point out a vital truth. The story of Abraham was not written in the Scriptures just to honour him.

A GLORIOUS UNIVERSAL TRUTH

Paul believed that Abraham’s story was recorded in the Scriptures to illustrate the following truth.

“Now it was not written for his sake alone
that it was imputed to him, but also for us.
it shall be imputed to us who believe in Him
who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead,
who was delivered up because of our offenses,
and was raised because of our justification.”
Romans 4:23-25

Can we believe in the following truths with all our heart?

a) That we have sinned against God

The word “offenses” is another word to describe “sin”.

b) That Jesus was delivered up because of our offenses
i) Jesus took the penalty of our sins upon Himself.
ii) He bore all our suffering for us.
iii) He died on our behalf.
c) God raised Jesus from the dead
i) His resurrection demonstrated the sufficiency of His sacrifice.
ii) God had accepted Christ’s death and vindicated Him by raising Him up.
d) God offers us justification when we fully believe in Christ Jesus as our Saviour
i) Justification means that God has forgiven us of all our sins.
ii) It also means that He has imputed Christ’s righteousness to us.
iii) All who believe in Christ Jesus has the same imputed righteousness as Abraham!
