"The heir of the world"

Text: Romans 4:13

THE PROMISE GOD MADE TO ABRAHAM

Paul once again returned to the subject of God’s promise to Abraham. Let us ponder the following text.

“For the promise that he would be the heir of the world
was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law,
but through the righteousness of faith.”
Romans 4:13

1. God’s promise to Abraham

a) This promise was repeated a number of times (Cf. Genesis 12, 13, 15, 17, 22).
b) Promise repeated to:-
i) Isaac (Cf. Genesis 26)
ii) Jacob (Cf. Genesis 28, 35)

2. “Heir of the world”

a) This phrase is a lofty one that offers tremendous blessings.
b) Who can qualify to be called “heir of the world”?
c) There is only One Person who can be rightly called “heir of the world”
d) That Person is the Lord Jesus Christ!

3. The scope of the Promise to Abraham

a) It covered the genealogical descendants of Abraham.
b) It covered much more… it included all who shared the same faith as Abraham.
c) Cryptic and prophetic reference in the Abrahamic Covenant.
i) That Seed was none other than the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.
ii) Through Christ rich and untold blessings are outpoured.
iii) Christ is the rightful Heir of the world,

The Abrahamic Covenant was more profound than most Jews imagined!
