"The steps of the faith"

Text: Romans 4:12

THE CONTINUING DEBATE OF ABRAHAM AS FATHER

This subject was debated between the Jews and the Lord Jesus Christ (Cf. John 8). The debate may be summarized briefly as follows:-

1. The claim of the Jews

They claimed that they were descendants of Abraham based on a racial (physical) genealogy.

2. The challenge of Jesus

He urged them to examine their theological understanding:-

a) If they were Abraham’s children would they not do “the works of Abraham”? (Cf. John 8:39)
b) The Jews had sought to kill Jesus! Abraham would never have contemplated murdering anyone (Cf. John 8:40)

3. The counter claim of Jesus

Jesus solemnly warned the Jews that they were doing the works of their father, the devil (Cf. John 8:44)!

PAUL’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEBATE

Paul had this to add to the debate of the descendants of Abraham.

“And the father of circumcision to those
who not only are of the circumcision,
but who also walk in the steps of the faith which
our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised.”
Romans 4:12

1. Acceptance of Jewish claim on Abraham as “the father of circumcision”.

It would be pointless to debate this genealogical issue! Of course the Jews were the physical descendants of Abraham!

2. More than the genealogical aspect must be considered

This was Paul’s contribution to the discussion. He pursued the subject of faith!

a) All Jews are expected to keep the rite of circumcision.
b) But there is more… there is also “the steps of the faith”.

3. Abraham’s steps of faith

It was Abraham’s faith that brought out “imputed righteousness”. That faith, being genuine, also meant that Abraham took care to walk in faith!
