"Do we then make void the law through faith?"

Text: Romans 3:31

THE PLACE OF THE LAW

Paul had to tread very carefully when dealing with the Jews. There were certain “red flags” where the Jews were concerned. One of those was the question of “the Law”.

WAS THE LAW MADE VOID?

This question had to be raised up openly and honestly. There was no skirting an issue as important as the discussion of the place of “the law”.

“Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not!
On the contrary, we establish the law.”
Romans 3:31

1. What does the word “void” mean?

Let us consider the following thoughts!

a) Was the law redundant?
b) Was the law now unimportant?
c) Was the law rendered useless?
d) Has faith done away with the law entirely?

These were some questions that bothered many Jews. Paul’s teaching was not easily comprehended by many.

2. We establish the law

a) Denial that the law has been made void by faith
b) Rejection of any suggestion that the law had been rendered useless because of faith.
c) How may the law be said to be established?
i) The law pointed out man’s state of sin.
ii) The law established that man needs to be justified by God.
iii) The Law and Prophets pointed to God’s Redeemer… the Lord Jesus.
iv)The law was given by God to convict man of his desperate need for redemption through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
