"There is nothing unclean of itself..."

Text: Romans 14:14

THE “EATING” CONTROVERSY

Paul knew that the controversy of “eating” would not go away easily. The issue involved much more than just the mere consumption of food.

1. It was a religious issue

Religious issues, being what they are, had many dimensions. The heart, the mind, the conscience, the community, the traditions etc were all involved. It is difficult to find a single answer that would satisfy all aspects!

2. It was a long-standing issue for some

This was especially difficult for those who were brought up to religiously avoid certain types of food. Their new-found faith in Christ did little to help them overcome a weak conscience.

3. It was a personal issue

This complicated things even more. The personal element made the controversy even more complex.

A PERSONAL STATEMENT

Paul felt that it was timely for him to give his personal view on this controversial subject. Personal opinions were allowed, as long as doctrinal or moral issues were not compromised.

“I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus
that there is nothing unclean of itself…”
Romans 14:14a

1. I know and am convinced

a) This expresses Paul’s personal conviction.
b) His conviction was based on sound knowledge.

2. Convinced by the Lord Jesus

a) Paul appealed to knowledge given by the Lord Jesus Himself.
b) An analysis of this statement would reveal two possible lines of thought:-
i) Paul received a direct word from the Lord Jesus.
ii) He came to this conclusion after studying what Jesus taught.
c) His personal conviction was that no food item was unclean in itself!
