"You were once disobedient, yet have now obtained mercy..."

Text: Romans 11:30

REMEMBERING THE PAST

Had the Gentiles forgotten their sinful past, that they were now having a haughty spirit? Paul urged the Gentile believers not to forget their sinful past!

“For as you were once disobedient to God,
yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience,
even so these also have now been disobedient, that through
the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy. For God
has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy
on all.”
Romans 11:30-32

1. Disobedience of the Gentiles

This was a fact that cannot be disputed! Nevertheless, the mercy of God was experienced and salvation was wrought.

2. Disobedience of the Jews

The Jews had the same problem of disobedience!

a) Their disobedience was not totally wasted.
b) Their disobedience led to the opening of the preaching of the Gospel to the Gentiles/

3. The mercy of God

a) This was gratefully experienced by the Gentiles.
b) The mercy of God shown to the Gentiles was still not fully comprehended by many Jews!

THE DOCTRINE OF MERCY

Paul’s thoughts on the reversal of roles are truly profound.

1. The disobedience of the Jews brought about mercy for the Gentiles.

2. The mercy of God shown to the Gentiles was God’s special way of bringing the Jews back to Himself.

3. The doctrine of salvation by grace underscored.

a) Disobedience is sin!
b) Deliverance from sin is however possible through the mercy of God- for the Gentiles and for the Jews alike!
