Day 57 – Psalm 96

“For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised…” Psalm 96:4a

THE GREATNESS OF THE LORD

The heart cannot but sing wonderful songs of praise if it has come to know and appreciate the greatness of God!

“For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the LORD made the heavens.”
Psalm 96:4-5

1. The context of the psalmist

a) The psalmist showed awareness that there were many that were called “gods”.
b) He noted that these “gods” were given worship.
c) He further observed that these “gods” were “idols”.
d) The worship given by the devotees.
i) They could give elaborate worship.
ii) Great effort was mounted to offer worship to the idols.

2. The concern of the psalmist

a) How should the Lord be worshipped?
b) How had Israel worshipped the Lord?

3. The challenge of the psalmist

a) He posits that the Lord is the Creator of the heavens (and the earth).
b) He argues that the Lord was indeed very great.
c) This being the case, then it follows that He deserves to be praised greatly!
d) It is correct to give the highest reverence to God.
e) The true worshipper cannot but:-
i) Sing to the Lord and bless His name.
ii) Declare His glory among the nations because He is truly a great God.
