Day 51 – Psalm 95

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down…” Psalm 95:6a

A STRONG WORD

How should we offer worship to God? The psalmist offers a strong word as to how we should consider worship.

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture,
And the sheep of His hand.”
Psalm 95:6-7

1. Genuflection in worship

a) “Let us worship and bow down”
i) This is a literal and physical act of bowing down in worship.
ii) The symbolic meaning is clear- the people must worship God in humility and awe.
b) “Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker”
i) The word “kneel” explains the idea of “bowing down”.
ii) It is an important symbolic gesture recognizing the greatness of God.
c) Modern day worship
i) We may not actually include the physical act of genuflection.
ii) We recognize that any physical act may become a mere religious ritual.
iii) Our focus is to encourage humble worship from the heart!

2. Reasons for this approach to worship

a) “For He is our God”
i) There is grateful and humble recognition of who God is.
ii) He is God our Maker.
b) “And we are the people of His pasture”
i) We should be grateful we can be called “the people of His pasture”.
ii) We should be thankful that we are “the sheep of His hand”.
