Day 47 – Psalm 94

“The throne of iniquity…” Psalm 94:20a

A SOBERING THOUGHT

The psalmist found great comfort in the mercy of God. His faith in God remained strong and intact. This is to be even more appreciated because of the tough circumstances he found himself in.

“Shall the throne of iniquity, which devises evil by law,
Have fellowship with You?
They gather together against the life of the righteous,
And condemn innocent blood.”
Psalm 94:20-21

a) This is a reference to the reigns of evil kings.
b) Examples of “thrones of iniquity”:

ii) Some of the kings in the Southern kingdom (Judah) also had “thrones of iniquity”.

2. Features of these thrones of iniquity

ii) King Manasseh actively promoted vile idolatry in Judah (2 Chronicles 33).
b) They gathered against the life of the righteous.
c) They condemned the innocent.

3. “Fellowship with You”

a) Idolatry prevailed in the land of both Israel and Judah.
b) Some thought it was possible to worship both the LORD and idols.
c) The psalmist raised up this anomaly in this text.
d) He and many of the righteous grieved over the spiritual state of their nation.
e) They knew what God would do! He would have to punish and purge the land of sin!
