Day 39 – Psalm 94

“Rise up, O Judge of the earth…” Psalm 94:2a

AN APPEAL TO THE SUPREME JUDGE

The highest court of appeal is before the throne of God. The following text summarises an appeal of the psalmist to the Lord as the supreme Judge of the earth.

“Rise up, O Judge of the earth;
Render punishment to the proud.
LORD, how long will the wicked,
How long will the wicked triumph?”
Psalm 94:2-3

1. “Rise up, O Judge of the earth”

a) This is an appeal to the Lord to judge and to take immediate action in the interest of justice.
b) The Lord is now addressed as “O Judge of the earth” (another formal title).

2. “Render punishment to the proud”

a) The word “vengeance” is tied with the word “punishment”.
b) Rendering punishment to the proud
i) For their arrogance.
ii) For their impudence.
iii) For their oppression of the weak whom they despise.

3. “How long”

a) Once again we have a literary device employed.
b) The wicked have been allowed to get away with their proud ways for too long.
c) They seem to be triumphant too many times.

4. “Lord, how long”

a) This is an appeal to God to hasten judgment against the wicked.
b) The psalmist is convinced that “the proud” and “the wicked” will be punished.
c) The proud and the wicked- these two phrases often go together. They complement each other. Both will be judged by the Lord!
