“You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra…” Psalm 91:13a

WALKING CONFIDENTLY

Life is fraught with danger. But the person who keeps close to the Lord, and making Him his dwelling place, may walk confidently.

“You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.”
Psalm 91:13

1. The imagery of the young lion

a) The lion was a feared animal.
b) The young lion was feared especially.
i) It is feared because of its strength.
ii) It is feared because it has power to kill.
c) It became an imagery of a strong enemy.
d) Fearless amidst a strong enemy.
i) God will give adequate protection.
ii) God will enable His beloved children to tread upon the lion!
iii) The story of Daniel in the lions’ den stands out (Daniel 6).

2. The imagery of a cobra/a serpent

a) In this context, there is no great distinction between the cobra and the serpent.
b) The serpent/cobra is feared because it is a poisonous snake.
c) Its strike can kill with great swiftness.
d) The serpent was an imagery of wickedness.
i) The wicked is compared to a serpent that can kill.
ii) The wicked can and will strike at the innocent.
e) The faithful are reminded that they need not fear the wicked.
f) God will enable them to trample the wicked serpent underfoot.
