Day 9 – Psalm 90

“So teach us to number our days… Psalm 90:12a” Psalm 90:12a

THE WRATH OF GOD

Much of Psalm 90 deals with the subject of God’s wrath. It is a doctrine that must not be taken lightly. Moses gives needed wisdom as to how we may make an appropriate response.

“Who knows the power of Your anger?
For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath.
So teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Psalm 90:11-12

1. “Who knows the power of Your anger?”

a) Moses does not attempt to answer this question.
b) The answer is at best “open-ended”.
c) Nobody can fully comprehend “the power of (God’s) anger”.

2. “For as the fear of You, so is Your wrath”

a) We should fear the Lord.
b) We should fear His wrath.
c) No matter how blessed we may be, we must ever practise the fear of God’s wrath.

3. “So teach us to number our days”

a) This is something few know how to practise.
b) This is much-needed wisdom.
c) We cannot adopt an attitude that we will live indefinitely on this earth.
d) It would be wise to recognize that our days “are numbered”.
i) Seventy years is approximately 25,550 days.
ii) Eighty years is approximately 29,200 days (not counting the leap years).

4. “That we may gain a heart of wisdom”

Wisdom is badly needed if we are to live out our short span of life meaningfully. Let us pray for wisdom from God so that our life on earth would be fruitful and significant. Moses certainly used his life most significantly in the last 40 years of his life. He devoted it to serving God.
