Day 358 – Psalm 89

“You have also turned back the edge of his sword…” Psalm 89:43a

IN BATTLE

Ethan recognized the need for God’s help in battle. Without Divine help, no battle could be won. Judah discovered this truth painfully.

“You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
And have not sustained him in the battle.”
Psalm 89:43

1. “You”

a) Once again there is humbling recognition of God’s involvement.
b) Victory or defeat lay in the hands of God.
c) God had not been on the side of His people.
d) Ethan had not noted the reason for this!
i) Judah had turned its back on the Lord their God!
ii) They had treacherously spurned Him.
iii) They had turned to false gods for help instead.
iv) These false gods had failed Judah miserably.

2. “Turned back the edge of his sword”

a) The edge of the sword is a description of the sword as a weapon in battle.
b) Judah had fought in vain without the help of God.
c) The edge of Judah’s sword was not sharp in the battle.

3. “And have not sustained him in the battle”

a) A battle is usually fought over days.
b) Seldom are battles fought in a matter of a few hours.
c) Long-drawn battles are always hard to sustain.
d) The army must be thoroughly prepared to sustain long battles.
e) God’s help to sustain Judah’s war effort was recognized; but God did not sustain the nation.
