Day 350 – Psalm 89

“Once I have sworn by My holiness…” Psalm 89:35a

A FRESH APPRECIATION

God’s faithfulness to the covenant He gave to David is truly remarkable! How we need to have a fresh appreciation of God Himself and His covenants. His faithfulness is not limited to the Davidic covenant! His faithfulness is to be found behind every word that He has spoken.

“Once I have sworn by My holiness,
I will not lie to David.”
Psalm 89:35

1. “Once”

a) God does not need to speak more than once.
b) His word is good, even if He speaks just once.

2. “I have sworn”

a) God does not need to swear.
b) Yet He takes an oath so that man may be further assured.

3. “Sworn by My holiness”

a) Man swears by something sacred.
b) God does not have anything more sacred than Himself.
c) He thus swears on His “holiness”.
i) This is an attribute of God.
ii) Holiness is an integral part of the Being of God.
iii) To swear by His holiness is to bind God to every word promised.

4. “I will not lie to David”

a) God is incapable of lying.
b) Every word of His is truth.
c) Solemnly He states the obvious here.

Only sinful and wicked man may yet perversely conclude that God could lie. We affirm afresh and vigorously, that we have a God who will never lie to His people! He will keep every word He has spoken.
