“Then I will punish their transgression…” Psalm 89:32a

SOLEMN WORDS OF WARNING

The promise of great blessing is thrilling to the soul! But what about solemn words of warning? These words of admonition needed to be given too.

“Then I will punish their transgression with the rod,
And their iniquity with stripes.”
Psalm 89:32

1. “Then I will punish”

a) This is the prerogative of God.
b) This is stated very clearly at the outset.

2. What will be punished?

a) Transgression
i) This is a reference to the breaking of the laws of God.
ii) The deliberate breaking of God’s commandments will be punished.
iii) Kings are also subjected to the laws of judiciary.
iv) They are not above the law at any time.
b) Iniquity
i) This is a synonym for “transgression”.
ii) It is a reference to the problem of sin.
iii) All transgressions and iniquities are “sinful deeds in God’s sight”.

3. How will the sinful kings be punished?

a) The “rod” is mentioned as the means of correction.
b) This reminds us of disciplining errant children.
c) “Stripes” is a reference to heavier punishment.
d) God reserves the right to mete out the punishment that fits the sin.
e) The intention of these disciplinary measures is to redeem the sinners.
