THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A COVENANT

The significance of God’s covenant with David is highlighted in this text.

“My mercy I will keep for him forever,
And My covenant shall stand firm with him.”
Psalm 89:28

1. “My covenant”

a) This was mentioned in Psalm 89:3.
b) This is repeated again in Psalm 89:28.

2. “And My covenant shall stand firm with him”

a) God will always stand firm on what He has promised in His covenant.
b) Indeed God cannot but stand firm on His covenant-word given.

3. “My mercy”

a) Mercy was a foundational word of promise.
b) Why was there emphasis on “mercy”?
i) Because God knew that David would sin.
ii) Because He knew that the whole nation would sin against Him.
iii) Because He knew that there were many inherent weaknesses in David and in the nation of Israel.
iv) His mercy would be badly needed by one and all.

4. “My mercy I will keep for him forever”

a) What a glorious promise this was!
b) David would avail himself of God’s mercy on numerous occasions.
i) Mercy was needed in tough times.
ii) Mercy was also present amidst bountiful blessings.
iii) God would keep His promise of granting mercy to David forever.
