Day 340 – Psalm 89

“Also I will set his hand over the sea…” Psalm 89:25a

A DESCRIPTION OF THE KINGDOM OF DAVID

God told Abraham about the land that He would give to him and his descendants. David would be given an idea of the kingdom that he would rule over.

“Also I will set his hand over the sea,
And his right hand over the rivers.”
Psalm 89:25

1. More than Judah in mind

a) David was anointed king by Judah (2 Samuel 2:4).
b) God’s plan for David was that he would rule all of Israel and not just his tribe.

2. “Also I will set his hand over the sea”

a) This is a veiled reference to David moving beyond the tribal territory of Judah.
b) David in time would have allies among the Phoenicians.
c) His kingdom would stretch to the seas.
d) God would give him authority over the land He promised to Abraham (Genesis 15:18-21).

3. “And his right hand over the rivers”

a) Rivers were mentioned in God’s promise to Abraham.
i) The river of Egypt (Genesis 15:18)
ii) The great River Euphrates (Genesis 15:18)
b) David’s reign would cover all these regions.

AN EXTENSIVE KINGDOM

When we understand the size of the kingdom that God would give to David that we begin to appreciate just why He gave so many promises.

1. David would need God’s power.

2. He would need God’s Divine help.

3. He would need to fall back on God’s faithfulness and mercy.

4. He would be grateful that God would associate His name with the kingdom of David.
