“The enemy shall not outwit him…” Psalm 89:22a

A BATTLE OF WITS

We have an intriguing statement about the battles that David would be waging as he worked at establishing the kingdom of Israel.

“The enemy shall not outwit him,
Nor the son of wickedness afflict him.”
Psalm 89:22

1. “The enemy”

David had many enemies. The word “enemy” is a collective noun to describe all his adversaries.

a) The house of Saul became an enemy to David in the initial years.
b) The Philistines were perpetual foes.

2. “The enemy shall not outwit him”

a) Some battles were fought on the battlefield.
b) Other battles were more difficult to fight because snares and traps were laid.
c) God’s promise was a welcome one.
i) He would warn David.
ii) He would deliver him.
iii) He would preserve him.
d) David’s part was to be diligent in seeking the Lord in prayer.

3. “Nor the son of wickedness afflict him”

a) The son of wickedness is an expression for “wickedness”
b) A person who indulges in doing wicked things would be called “a son of wickedness”.
c) In any country there would be “sons of wickedness”.
i) These could be thieves.
ii) These could also be murderers.
iii) They could also be people who had treasonous plans.
