Day 334 – Psalm 89

“Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one…” Psalm 89:19a

A DIVINE WORD GIVEN

We may glory in God’s creation. We may also glory in the marvelous ways in which God protects and preserves His saints. Another thing that we must rejoice in greatly is the way in which God gives His divine word to His servants.

“Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one,
And said: ‘I have given help to one who is mighty;
I have exalted one chosen from the people.'”
Psalm 89:19

1. “Then You spoke in a vision”

a) The giving of a vision was one of the ways in which God communicated His word in the days of the ancient prophets.
b) The vision was given and then it had to be interpreted and proclaimed.

2. “To Your holy one”

a) In this particular context the “holy one” would be the prophet Nathan (2 Samuel 7:2).
b) In a general sense, the phrase “holy one” would be a reference to a good servant of God.

3. God’s word

a) “I have given help to one who is mighty”
i) In context this would be a reference to David.
ii) He was indeed a mighty warrior even from a young age; he was fearless.
iii) God gave him help and David was thus able to slay Goliath (1 Samuel 17).
b) “I have exalted one chosen from the people”
i) Given the same, present context, this would be a reference to David.
ii) In God choosing David, he was truly exalted.
iii) David had the humblest of backgrounds, being an unknown shepherd lad.
iv) He was exalted firstly as a champion of Israel.
v) In time, God would exalt him to the highest public office- the king of Israel.
