THE SYMBOL “SHIELD”

The word “shield” was used frequently in the Scriptures.

1. God promised Abraham that He would be his “shield” (Genesis 15:1)

This was God’s way of promising special Divine protection for Abraham.

2. King David expressed appreciation to God for being his shield (Psalm 3:3)

David also understood and appreciated the significance of God being his shield. God protected him from many enemies.

3. The apostle Paul described faith as a shield (Ephesians 6:16b)

The apostle Paul added a special thought to the imagery of “a shield”. He wrote about faith as a shield against the fiery darts of the devil.

ANOTHER APPLICATION

Ethan used the word “shield” in another way. The imagery of a shield could be applied in a number of ways.

“For our shield belongs to the LORD,
And our king to the Holy One of Israel.”
Psalm 89:18

1. “For our shield belongs to the LORD”

a) This is a reference to the battle shield.
b) All who enlisted in the army of the Lord would be issued a shield that would bear God’s divine crest.
c) This would make all the soldiers have a special sense of belonging to God’s army.

2. “And our king to the Holy One of Israel”

a) This is a reference to the earthly king of Israel.
b) He “belongs” to God, the Holy One of Israel.
c) His rank as king was an exalted one.
d) However he only represented the Divine King of kings.

3. “The Holy One of Israel”

This was a special way of describing the Lord. He is to be revered as One who was truly Holy. He who is holy will keep His covenant with the house of David. In His faithfulness and His mercy, He would lead and bless His saints.
