Day 328 – Psalm 89

“Strong is Your hand…” Psalm 89:13b

THE STRENGTH OF GOD

It is challenging to fully fathom the power and might of God. Even though we “know” that it takes great power to create the universe and to sustain it, this thought is still fairly abstract. Ethan attempts to help his readers comprehend the power of God better by using anthropomorphic (“human”) expressions to describe the power of God.

“You have a mighty arm;
Strong is Your hand, and high is Your right hand.”
Psalm 89:13

1. Anthropomorphic expressions

a) God is depicted as having “arms” and “hands”.
b) He is a Spirit and thus does not possess such limbs.
c) But these anthropomorphic expressions help us understand God a little better.

2. “You have a mighty arm”

a) The word “arm” was often associated with the “sword arm”.
b) A mighty arm is a reference to a person who is powerful and mighty in battle.

3. “Strong is Your hand”

a) The two things go together.
i) The mighty arm
ii) The strong hand
b) They complement each other.
i) The arm is the source of power.
ii) The hand wields the power of action.

4. “High is Your right hand”

a) This is also an expression of great power.
b) This is a reference to how the sword arm is raised high before a strike.
c) God’s sword arm is as mighty as it is high!
