“The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours…” Psalm 89:11a

HUMAN POSSESSIVENESS

As human beings we tend to be possessive. Children, from a very young age, express this sense of possessiveness. It is a characteristic of human beings to be possessive. But who really owns the things we call our own?

GOD’S SOVEREIGN RIGHTS

Ethan explores the subject of ownership or possession in the following text. He postulates a solemn truth in the following text.

“The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The world and all its fullness, You have founded them.”
Psalm 89:11

1. “The heavens are Yours”

a) Man has so far not attempted to claim the heavens as his domain.
b) The heavens remain as God’s!

2. “The earth also is Yours”

a) Countries guard their borders carefully lest others encroach.
b) Property is carefully protected by the law.
c) But who truly owns the earth?

The psalmist argues that the earth rightly belongs to the Lord!

3. “The world and all its fullness”

a) God owns the world.
b) And its fullness.
i) Oil reserves
ii) Gold
iii) Rare earth etc

4. “You have founded them”

a) A fundamental truth must be established.
b) God is the Sovereign Owner of the whole world by virtue of His creating them (“founded”).
