“You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.” Psalm 89:10b

EXPRESSIONS OF THE POWER OF GOD

The expressions of the might of God are many! The psalmists noted a number of expressions of God’s power.

1. With great power God made the heavens and the earth (Psalm 8, 19).

2. With equal power God made man (Psalm 8).

3. With wonderful power God controls the raging seas (Psalm 89:9).

THE POWER OF GOD DISPLAYED IN THE DEFEAT OF ENEMIES

The power of God is most obvious when it is deployed to defeat wicked enemies.

“You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one who is slain;
You have scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.”
Psalm 89:10

1. “Who is Rahab?”

a) This is not the Rahab who helped the spies sent by Joshua (Joshua 2:1).
b) This Rahab is spelt differently from the above in Hebrew.
i) It may be linked with Psalm 87:4.
ii) It is a country (mentioned together with other countries like Babylon etc).
iii) It is likely this is a veiled reference to Egypt.
iv) It is called Rahab mythically (as a monster).
c) God broke the monster Rahab with His great power.

2. “You have scattered Your enemies”

a) A number of enemies were mentioned in Psalm 87.
i) Babylon
ii) Philistia
iii) Tyre
iv) Ethiopia
b) All were scattered by God in His great power.
