“Who is mighty like You, O LORD?” Psalm 89:8b

DWELLING ON THE GREAT MIGHT OF GOD

All too often we take might of God for granted. We are encouraged to take time to dwell on the great might and power of God.

“O LORD God of hosts,
Who is mighty like You, O LORD?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.”
Psalm 89:8

1. “O LORD God of hosts”

a) This title of God features His might.

i) He is the Head of a powerful host of angels.

ii) If angels are mighty, how much more God who is the “LORD God of hosts”!

b) Combination of two ideas:-

i) LORD

ii) God

iii) This combination also suggests great might!

2. “Who is mighty like You, O LORD?”

a) Once again we have a rhetorical question.

b) The intended answer: There is no one as mighty as the Lord.

3. “Your faithfulness also surrounds You”

a) The word “faithfulness” is now used four times.

i) It is associated with the mercies of God (Psalm 89:1).

ii) Faithfulness is something that God has firmly established (Psalm 89:2).

iii) God’s faithfulness is associated with His works of wonder (Psalm 89:5).

iv) God’s might is now associated with His faithfulness.

b) God’s might and His faithfulness are meant to inspire a great sense of reverence in our heart.
