Day 317 – Psalm 89

“Mercy shall be built up forever…” Psalm 89:2a

GREAT INSPIRATION

What motivates people to write psalms or sing for the Lord fervently? Ethan shares his source of inspiration.

“For I have said, ‘Mercy shall be built up forever;
Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens.'”
Psalm 89:2

1. “For I have said”

a) Ethan recalls his words in the past.
b) How often had he spoken to people on these subjects!

2. “Mercy shall be built up forever”

a) Mercies of the Lord were in mind (Psalm 89:1).
i) The word “mercy” is used in the plural here.
ii) The focus then would be on individual acts of mercy from the Lord.
b) When “mercy” is used in the singular.
i) The idea of “mercy” is in mind (rather than acts of mercy).
ii) God’s mercy is something we can rely on forever.
iii) Mercy may be thought of as “reserves” that have been built up.
iv) God’s reserve of mercy will last forever; it cannot be exhausted no matter how much it is given out.

3. “Your faithfulness You shall establish in the very heavens”

a) God’s mercy and His faithfulness are inseparable concepts.
b) God’s mercy may be depended upon because of His great faithfulness.
c) His faithfulness is described as something that God establishes.
i) God has established that He is faithful to mankind on earth.
ii) God has also established that He is faithful at all times.
iii) God’s faithfulness is so well established it reaches to the very heavens!
