Day 302 – Psalm 88

“Adrift among the dead…” Psalm 88:5a

MORBID THOUGHTS

Heman must have struggled much with his emotions as he looked at his circumstances. His thoughts became darker and more morbid.

“Adrift among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You remember no more,
And who are cut off from Your hand.”
Psalm 88:5

1. Imagining a mass grave

a) The above text well describes “a mass grave”.
b) This is not a modern invention.
c) It was a logical thing to do if one is to dispose of many who are slain.

2. “Adrift among the dead”

a) The individuality is lost.
b) The slain is just one of many.
c) Even the most illustrious is simply “adrift among the dead”.

3. “Like the slain who lie in the grave”

a) There is no dignity to be buried this way.
b) There is great forlornness to contemplate death in these circumstances.

4. “Whom You remember no more, and who are cut off from Your hand”

a) Heman was thinking about the difference between the dead and the living.
i) The living still had hope that God would remember him.
ii) The dead had lost that opportunity.
b) Heman was not discounting the significance of being in the Presence of God at death.
c) He was just too caught up with morbid thoughts of death at this time.
d) Morbidity of thought can create great despair in the heart.
