Day 295 – Psalm 87

“The LORD will record…” Psalm 87:6a

A DIVINE REGISTRY

The sons of Korah discovered and expressed the truth of belonging to God most beautifully in the following text.

“The LORD will record,
When He registers the peoples:
‘This one was born there.'”
Psalm 87:6

1. Registration of citizens

a) This was a practice observed in ancient nations.
b) There were a number of ways in which people could become citizens:
i) Because of ancestry.
ii) Because of marriage alliances.
iii) Because it was conferred by the King (perhaps because of valorous acts done for the country).

2. “The LORD will record”

a) The Lord Himself would record who belonged to Him.
b) The peoples:-
i) Israel would certainly be numbered.
ii) People from other nations could be included too.
iii) These must, of course, have come to have faith in God.

3. “This one was born there”

a) This is now the third reference to the privilege of being born in Zion.
b) Great joy ought to fill the heart because of this privilege.
c) There were many wonderful blessings:-
i) Knowledge of God would be freely available.
ii) Knowledge of God’s special relationship with His people ought to bring great joy.
