Day 277 – Psalm 86

“Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord…” Psalm 86:8a

THE GODS IN THE DAYS OF DAVID

King David had a clear and strong faith in the Lord God of Israel. But what were the gods worshipped in his time?

“Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord;
Nor are there any works like Your works.”
Psalm 86:8

1. “Among the gods”

a) How did Israel become entangled with idolatry?
i) The children of Israel after Joshua’s conquest of the land of Canaan unfortunately “served their gods” (Judges 3:5-6).
ii) This came about because of marrying the natives who did not believe in the God of Israel.
b) Names of some of the deities worshipped:-
i) Baal was one of the chief deities worshipped in the days of Judge Gideon (Judges 6:28).
ii) Dagon was one of the major gods of the Philistines (1 Samuel 5:2-3).

2. “There is none like You, O Lord”

a) David had every reason to say what he did.
b) No deities could be compared to the Lord God of Israel as far as David was concerned.

3. “Nor are there any works like Your works”

a) The works of God that David personally experienced were indelibly etched on his heart and mind.
b) He knew of no works that could compare with the following:-
i) Taking Israel out of Egypt
ii) Establishing Israel in Canaan
iii) Defeating Goliath and the Philistines
iv) Mighty answers to prayers time and time again
