“You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people…” Psalm 85:2a

ACKNOWLEDGING GOD

The sons of Korah expressed great consciousness of God and His role in Israel.

“LORD, You have been favourable to Your land;
You have brought back the captivity of Jacob.
You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people;
You have covered all their sin.”
Psalm 85:1-2

1. You

a) There was acute consciousness of God and His role.
b) The pronoun “You” was a definite reference to the LORD.

2. Four vital acts of God acknowledged

a) God’s favour had been shown to Israel.
b) He had brought them back from captivity (Babylonian).
c) He had forgiven the iniquity of His people.
d) He had covered all their sins.

3. The significance of these vital acts of God

a) The problem of sin/iniquity.
i) It caused them to go into captivity.
ii) It caused untold suffering.
b) The solution to the problem of sin/iniquity.
i) Forgiveness was sought and found.
ii) The guilt of sin/iniquity was covered.
c) Ramification of this great favour shown by God.
i) The seventy year captivity under the Babylonians was over.
ii) The children of Jacob were able to return to their homeland- God’s land!
