Day 249 – Psalm 84

“O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer…” Psalm 84:8a

PRAYING TO GOD IN THE TEMPLE

The pilgrims have now made their way successfully to Zion. What drew the people to make the long and arduous journey to Jerusalem? The answer is astonishing.

“O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;
Give ear, O God of Jacob!”
Psalm 84:8

1. Praying in Jerusalem’s temple

One could pray to God from any place on earth. Somehow praying to God in Zion, and obeying God’s commandment to appear before Him made praying in Jerusalem extra special.

a) This was the reason the pilgrims were willing to face great hardship.
b) But what could have motivated the pilgrims?

2. Strong motivation

a) Love for the Lord
There must be a great sense of love for the Lord.
b) Love for God’s House
There must be an equally strong sense of love for God’s house (Psalm 84:1-2).
c) A living Faith
There must be strong faith-relationship with the living God (Psalm 84:2).
d) A great regard for God
There must be a deep knowledge of God (Psalm 84:3).

3. Historical- Theological motivation

a) The temple of Solomon had a rich heritage; to be there in the temple to worship and pray would in itself be enriching to the soul.
b) The deep and humble prayer of Solomon must be studied carefully to bring great inspiration (2 Chronicles 6).

THE INVOCATION OF GOD’S NAME

God’s name was invoked. There was both great awe and great humility.

1. “O LORD God of hosts”

His holy name must be uttered in awe!

2. “O God of Jacob”

Addressing the Lord as the “God of Jacob” would bring forth great feelings of personal unworthiness.
