“Even the sparrow has found a home…” Psalm 84:3

THE IDEA OF A TABERNACLE

What does the word “tabernacle” mean? What does it represent in the following text?

“Even the sparrow has found a home,
And the swallow a nest for herself,
Where she may lay her young-
Even Your altars, O LORD of hosts,
My King and my God.”
Psalm 84:3

1. The Original idea of a Tabernacle

a) Literally it simply means “a tent”.
b) In the original idea which God revealed to Moses, the tabernacle was to be God’s sanctuary (Exodus 25:8a).
c) In the tabernacle God would dwell among His people (Exodus 25:8b).

2. From a Tent to a Temple

a) The Tabernacle was replaced by the Temple that King Solomon built.
b) From “a tent” it had now become a magnificent building.
c) But the essence of it being God’s dwelling place prevailed.

3. God’s acceptance of the Temple

a) The tent/temple was built “for the name of the LORD God” (2 Chronicles 6:10d).
b) God accepted the temple as “a house of sacrifice” (2 Chronicles 7:12c).

4. It was “home” for the humble birds of the air

a) The magnificent temple was built at great cost.
b) It was one of the wonders of the ancient world.
c) But it was simply “home”.
i) To the humble sparrow.
ii) And to the humble swallow.
