THE WORK OF THE SONS OF KOHATH

What was the work of the sons of Korah? They belonged to the family of Kohath. The work assignment given to them may be found in Numbers 4:4-15.

1. The work of Aaron and his sons

a) They looked after “the most holy things” (Numbers 4:4).
i) The ark of the Covenant (Numbers 4:5-6)
ii) The table of the showbread (Numbers 4:7)
iii) The lampstand (Numbers 4:9)
iv) The golden altar of incense (Numbers 4:11)
v) All furnishings of the tabernacle were to be carefully wrapped up (Numbers 4:15)
b) Their tasks
i) To pack up the Tabernacle holy artifacts each time Israel decamped.
ii) To set up the Tabernacle each time Israel encamped.

2. The work of the Kohathites (Numbers 4:15)

a) This would include the sons of Korah.
b) Their work was to carry the wrapped up holy artifacts.
c) They were not allowed to touch the holy articles on pain of death.

THE CONTEXT OF PSALM 84

The context of Psalm 84 would suggest that the area of ministry of the sons of Korah was not in the time of Moses. The reference to “Zion” (Psalm 84:7) would indicate that the sons of Korah were ministering in the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem. (Jerusalem was affectionately called “Zion”).

THE TEMPLE OF SOLOMON

When Solomon built the Temple of the Lord he determined that it would be a very beautiful edifice. He said to King Hiram, an old friend of King David:-

“Behold, I am building a temple for the name of the LORD
my God, to dedicate it to Him…
And the temple which I build will be great, for our God is
greater than all gods.”
2 Chronicles 2:4a, 5
