Day 208 – Psalm 81

“But My people would not heed My voice…” Psalm 81:11a

CHANCE AFTER CHANCE

Israel had been given chance after chance to return to God. The pages of the history books of Israel would bear solemn record of the many chances offered to the nation.

1. In the period of the Judges.

2. In the period of the kings.

Many servants of God were sent to the nation of Israel, urging them to return to God and to walk in His ways.

THE SAD AND SOLEMN REALITY

The sad reality of Israel’s response was captured in the following text.

“But My people would not heed My voice,
And Israel would have none of Me.”
Psalm 81:11

1. “But My people”

a) God still regarded Israel as His people.
b) Despite their sinful and wayward ways He still spoke of them as “My people”.

2. “Would not heed My voice”

a) God’s prophets would often open their mouth and declare, “Thus says the LORD…”
b) They were the spokesmen of God.
c) To heed them was to heed God’s voice.
d) To refuse to heed them was tantamount to rejecting God’s voice.

3. “Israel would have none of Me”

a) Israel was stubborn and stiff-necked.
b) It refused to repent.
c) They continued to reject the messengers of God.
d) They were effectively saying to God that they would have nothing to do with Him.

How could they have expected God to come to their rescue in their hour of trouble?
