Day 198 – Psalm 81

“Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob.” Psalm 81:1b

A CALL TO WORSHIP GOD

Asaph issues a call to worship God with the following words:-

“Sing aloud to God our strength;
Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob.”
Psalm 81:1

1. The focus of worship

a) The focus must always be God Himself.
b) As the occasion demands different attributes of God may be highlighted.
c) In this context the attribute of the strength of God is the focus.

2. Encouragement to worship

a) It is to be found in the Person of God Himself.
b) He is also called “The God of Jacob”.
c) The mention of “Jacob”.
i) He was mentioned for good reason.
ii) He found great strength from God to turn his life around.
iii) Worship is meant to be an uplifting experience.
iv) The worshipper should find renewed strength through the worship of the God of Jacob.

3. “Sing aloud… make a joyful shout”

a) Singing of praise-songs to God was a definite part of worship.
b) All songs of praise ought to be sung in definite ways:-
i) They ought to be sung out loud.
ii) This manner of singing can bring much encouragement to other worshippers.
iii) All songs of praise ought to be offered with much joy.
