Day 58 – Psalm 8

“How excellent is Your name on all the earth…” Psalm 8:1b

TAKING TIME TO THINK ABOUT GOD

Do you take time to think about God? Do you enjoy dwelling on thoughts about God? In our reading of the Psalms thus far, we have now come across two things the psalmists of old dwelt upon:

1. The Law of God (Psalm 1:2)

2. The name of God (Psalm 8:1)

A NATURE PSALM

Psalm 8 may well be called “A Nature Psalm”. This psalm of David shows him looking at the skies and being deeply inspired to write a special hymn of praise to God!

“O LORD, our LORD,
How excellent is Your name in all the earth,
Who have set Your glory above the heavens!”
Psalm 8:1

1. “O LORD, our LORD”

a) This is a cry filled with awe!
b) The Creator of the heavens is surely LORD of the universe He has created.
c) He is also the LORD (their covenantal God- Exodus 6:3).
d) He is a personal LORD to Israel.

2. “How excellent is Your name in all the earth”

a) Ancient Israel had been taught to hold God’s name in reverence.
b) His name was to be hallowed and never be used profanely (Exodus 20:7).
c) God’s name was now uttered in holy reverence here!

3. “Who have set Your glory above the heavens”

a) The heavens are indeed awesome and full of glory.
b) The LORD who made the heavens must be even more glorious!
c) His glory must be way above the majestic heavens.
